HostDepartment Review
HostDepartment Hosting
Written by sk8pnk

Apparently, many users have recently been complaining about the lack of responsiveness of the HostDepartment support teams. We have fielded several comment reviews that have denigrated the services. We have opted to only post the select few below.

Other plan providers in this category include Lypha, AnHosting, and HostGator.

I like the sound of it, but what does it mean? According to HostDepartment, exactly what it says. It means UNLIMITED:

  • Disk space
  • Bandwidth
  • Email accounts
  • Domain hosting

Sound too good to be true? I thought so too, so I signed up to check it out. Guess what? They aren't kidding! It actually kinda freaked me out a bit, so I called them before I signed up to make sure we were all on the same page. Turns out they were reading just what I was reading. So what did I do? I put all the websites that I host with alot of downloadable content on their service. And now, almost 10 months later, I am freakin ECSTATIC! I've saved a lot of expense by just picking the provider that offers the best service at the lowest price!

I get a shell account, so that takes care of most of my needs, unlimited email with a control panel to manage it, PHP, Perl, MySQL, Postgres, ColdFusion, ASP, and huge grin - free of charge.

Plus payment options fit my needs, because the minute I want to change providers, I can. I can either pay monthly, semi annually, or annually (with the biggest cost savings for the longest term, of course).

Bottom line: cheap is good, but sometimes the hidden costs of added bandwidth and utilization kills the would-be savings. HostDepartment hit the sweet spot for me in ROI.

Alright, so what else can I get for the money? How about technical support in real-time from one of the best interfaces I've seen FOR SO FREAKIN CHEAP!

Download the "DemoBar". This thing is awesome. I just open a browser and I have all the administrative interface functions at the ready.

Another cool feature is the "Server Information" section. I don't have to hunt around my shell account to find out how things need to be setup. I don't have to call and ask or even open up a trouble ticket. I just go to that section under the support section of the site, and I know how my site design needs to be layed out to work with Perl, PHP, CGI, or dot NET! Ever have this conversation:

Me: "Hi, I'm an experienced web developer calling you, Mr. First Level Technical Support."
Them: "Hello Mr. Web Developer. May I help you with a very, very simple question?"
Me: "Why is my CGI failing with Apache SuExec errors?"
Them: "Sure, I am more than willing to help. Could you tell me what exactly SuExec is?"
Me: "No. Goodbye."

I really don't like talking to technical support when I have to explain anything. Just tell me what I need to know in a very simple document and post it on your website. I keep some strange hours, and I don't like talking to people at 4am.

And don't even get me raving about the network status information updated in real-time on the website... because I will just start gushing. THATS THE BEST IDEA SINCE THE INTERNET.

Then theres the live person support. Needless to say, I have alot of fun with the peeps over there, and I think they know what I need and expect... because they already put it on the website for me.
